Tour of Connecticut - Stage 3

Bicycle Race

May 22 2005 - Litchfield County

Scheduled on WAPJ-FM: Tommorrow morning (Monday) 7 am -- description of the race.

Sunday's Highlights

5:42 pm -- #10, Todd Wells (Capital Velo Club-Pig Iron Sports) on the air, live. Finished 2nd.

5:34 pm -- #24, Bryan Smith on the air, live. Won the hill-climber's jersey. Gave a great interview!

5:14 pm -- Police removed barracades protecting the race circuit -- many cars waited to be let through!

WAPJ reported that #12, Mark McCormack (Colavita Olive Oil-Sutter Home) won the Stage.

It looked like Vassili Davidenko was either in the lead or 2nd place; but it was difficult to say which pair of cyclists was the lead. #1 (Davidenko) led immediately after the escort vehicle that bore a sign saying it was the head of the race. The last 10 laps (which crossed Forest St bridge) were exciting -- riders were pedaling down the bridge, towards Forest and Field -- unbelievable. Throughout the last laps, most of the pack was close together (they stayed within a few feet of one another).

WAPJ broke off regular programming and gave continous coverage of race progress, for the final ten laps around parts of Torrington. The lap circuit began at the start/finish line (Main and Maiden), turned northwest onto Water St, up Water and onto Migeon. North on Migeon to Forest St.; over the bridge; crosses Field and turned north (left) on Prospect. Worked its way back onto Main St, from somewhere north of Main and Pearl, traveling south to the finish line.

Earlier reports follow.

4:15 pm: Racers coming from the north past city hall -- finish line at Yankee Pedlar Inn.

Vasili Davidenko is contending but Smith is still in the lead.

Weather: 52°F and rising, overcast, no rain (2:49 pm downtown Torrington). Road surfaces are drying.

3:30-4:00 pm - riders due in Torrington. Riders on their way to New Preston, CT towards Morris at 3:18 pm.

The 2005 Tour of Connecticut bicycle race (Stage 3 - Litchfield County) began promptly today (Sunday) at 11:20 a.m. in Torrington. WAPJ-FM was on hand to broadcast the start of the race. Rain fell lightly on the crowd and the riders. Soon after, the cyclosportif riders began their event.

The race continues .. last live report was 2:00 pm Sunday, from Kent, CT; with periodic live updates from WAPJ studios.

The race map PDFs are from Sparta Cycling.
