A Starter Course on Andre Gide

Why the Interest?
Gide was a character. He was well-off financially and didn't have to pursue any type of career. Nevertheless he took his writing very seriously. I ran across various quotes from his works and found them very insightful. By the way, he is one of two authors whose entire body of work was placed on the Index Librorum Prohibitorum, which means at the time of his death Roman Catholics were forbidden to read his writings.

Brief bio sketch
Andre Gide was born in Paris, France on November 22, 1869. He married a cousin in 1895 and they were married 42 years -- believed to be the longest unconsumated marriage in recorded history. He became a writer and published an interesting variety of literature, including plays, journals, fiction, and autobiographical material. He was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1947. He died in 1951.
