Notes on Lucifer: The Morningstar Option #2 of 3

Title Page. Same as in Issue 1.

Page 1. The first five pages are things seen by Briadach, the blinded leader of the Lilum. There are more wishes being fulfilled by the velliety, and they're not in the Los Angeles area where the Begai's live.

Page 2.

Panel 4. Remiel is one of the two angels given charge of Hell in the Sandman "Seasons of Mist" story arc after Lucifer resigned in Sandman 23.

Page 3.

Panel 3. Remiel asked Lucifer to take back Hell in Sandman's "The Kindly Ones" story arc, issue 60.

Panel 5. A reminder that Lucifer has the power to take on an angel one on one. In the previous meeting Lucifer stated that he gave up none of his power when he resigned as Lord of Hell and could kill Remiel, but didn't want to face the consequences at that time. Remiel appeared to believe him.

Page 6.

Panels 1-3. This is Duma, one of the few angels without an 'el' suffix on their name. Duma was the angel of silence.

Panel 2. Lucifer is quoting from The Garden by Andrew Marvell. A footnote says Marvell is referring to a section of Virgil's Eclogues (9:19-20) but I don't see the connection.

Panel 5. Lucifer has trouble admitting he's in the service of Heaven.

Panel 6. tutelary - a guardian or protector of a person, place or thing.

Page 8.

Panels 4-6. Duma indicates that Lucifer's quest will lead him down four levels. I'm guessing this is four levels of creation, not four levels of Hell. We do get the location's name on page 21.

Panel 8. Lucifer departs on foot. Wonder if Remiel was there to make sure he exited?

Page 9.

Panel 5. Aftermath of Mahu's visit to the Begai's. Linda was killed, Rachel abducted and the other two are now under sedation. What's odd is that there's no mention of Paul or anything to show that his death or absence was noticed. It's all about Rachel.

Page 10.

Panel 1. Lucifer is back in the Los Angeles area (we learn this on page 13 - Mahu drove from the Begai's). Not sure why Lucifer didn't use the phone at his nightclub.

Panel 2. Lucifer is calling Mr. Farrell or Pharamond, a former deity who appeared in Sandman's "Brief Lives" story arc, issue 43.

Page 12. Panel 6. The wings of the bird in issue 1 get put to use. The backround and other colors are suddenly brighter. Lucifer acts as "the bringer of light."

Page 13. Lucifer drops Mahu from a pretty good height. Glad Lucifer's one of the good guys today.

Page 14. Too bad Mazikeen is working silently.

Page 16. Panel 5. Not sure how Rachel got thrown into the "reality trap" with Lucifer. She doesn't appear in any of the reflections of these two pages. However, if she's sitting at the bar then she might have been in Mazikeen's range of sight.

Page 19. Panel 2 Mahu survived the fall and does call Briadach "master" here in contrast to his claim in issue 1.

Panel 7. "Heaven's breached and hell's an empty gesture." Possibly Heaven is breached because Lucifer has been promised a letter of passage after having been "forever cast out."

Page 20. Panel 3. This is Mr. Farrell or Pharamond.

Panel 8. The destination is First World. Described on page 1 of issue 1.

Page 21. Panel 4. Two hundred and forty copper aes. My current guess is that these are like the coins that the DEATH of Terry Pratchett's Discworld series collects and spends: they're the ones places on the eyes of the dead. Lucifer had the foresight to collect and save some. Counting them individually might break up their magical linkage. We also saw two coins placed on Didi's eyes in a Death miniseries.

David M. Damast says:

The as (pl. aes) was the ancient Roman unit of copper coinage. One of the first coinages to be issued by the Republic, the as fell out of use after only a few centuries, having been rendered all but worthless by inflation.

Panel 6. Clans: Evidently a person can belong to one than more than one clan, although this list doesn't include either of the ones mentioned here.

Panel 7. Tsoodzil, the Navajo's sacred mountain of the south. Better known as Mount Taylor, site of the world's largest uranium mine. Some links about the Navajo and uranium mining:

Page 22. Panel 7. "Going to kill some gods." - Looks like the voiceless gods are in for a fight.
